A friend of mine said it would be best to put down a 4" base of sand mized with cement and dry lay the pavers over that. The cement will add much more to the price which is not a concern but he said that the pavers won't move and it is a better job. Any advice is appreciated. Also what is the siggested ratio of sand to cement. Thanks in advance.
Although we still use sand for the setting bed, we mix the sand dry with portland cement before screeding it out. We screed the sand and portland mix dry (no water added). We install the travertine on this dry setting bed, keeping it dry until we're able to cut in all the edge pieces and compact.

I would use a little extra cement and add more water. This will help get rid of the bubbles. A handheld vibrator on the edge of the form would also shake the bubbles out.
