Sealing. For all areas where raw chipboard has been exposed, such as sink cut outs and cut ends, spread a bead of BB Complete using a spatula ensuring total coverage. To seal a worktop to a wall ensure all surfaces are fully dry, dust free and stable.
Do seal all exposed chipboard edges such as cut-outs, but use silicone or acrylic caulk as the seal between the worktop and the wall. The way to get a good joint is not to add too much silicone, wear a disposable pladtic/latex glove, wet a finger and draw that down the joint. If the bead runs dry add a bit more and smooth again until it's right.
But I am surprised the worktop has been fitted with the bare chipboard edge to the front. ... so it would be worth sealing the whole front edge of the chipboard before putting the edging strip ...
KIAB Super Member. In the past I've used yatch varnish or exterior varnish as that's what I had on the shelf. Wouldn't use pva as that comes active again, & gets tacky when damp/ wet. Same with worktop cut outs for sinks,or cut edges, I seal them with yatch or exterior varnish. KIAB, Dec 7, 2015. #2.

The gold standard for sealing the edges would be to use a few coats of marine epoxy such as Botecote; the 'whatever is handy' standard would be a few coats of any oil based enamel. The door gasket on your dishwasher may not be sealing - check that for sure. I would: Stop using the dishwasher for a week to let the area dry out. Mask off the formica/laminate in front. Use a solvent-based polyurethane (exterior grade) on the particle board that is crumbling. This will soak in and hopefully glue it all back together.

What you do carry is silicone sealant, especially white and clear, and they do adhere well to cut chipboard surfaces. I've always made a point of sealing worktop cut outs and exposed end cuts, back edges of sink cabinets, cut edges in sink cabinets, cut edges on plinth strips, etc which can't be seen, with silicone.
Jointed cut edges that butt together use colourfill, apply to both sides, clamp together with bolts, let it go off 5 mins then scrape excess off from joint with plastic scraper. End edges use evo stick adhesive, apply to worktop and edging trim, wait till tacky then stick together. Wait 24hrs before trimming with sharp blade.
Seal worktop sink cutout. Looking to seal the rough cut, open chipboard of laminate worktop. I know that regular PVA glue isn't waterproof but you can get a waterproof PVA. Many suggestions like SBR and varnish but looking for quick setting stuff.
Advice please on materials and method for sealing the cut ends of laminated chipboard worktop. any bitumen based sealant, alternatively, silicone will be o/k. Open ends will have a cover strip to be fitted, treat top to top same as a cutout. Derek. I use wet rot wood hardener for this job.
