Unimin operates an open-pit Nepheline Syenite mine and related processing facilities near Kasshabog Lake near Havelock. Nepheline is a non-toxic mineral used in the manufacturing of various products, including glass and ceramics. The company had a Dust Management Plan in place.
UNIMIN extracts and produces feldspar at two adjacent sites located north of Havelock, Ontario. Nepheline syenite is a holocrystalline plutonic rock that consists largely of nepheline and alkali feldspar. The rocks are mostly pale colored, grey or pink, and in general appearance they are not unlike granites, but dark green varieties are also known. Phonolite is the fine-grained extrusive equivalent.
