I have used road millings and crushed concrete for my driveway and I have good results with both. The only downside is crushed concrete can be quite dusty and asphalt road millings may have some larger chunks that you might have to filter out. It looks to me that you already have some crushed concrete one your road. Upvote.
Asphalt millings also aren't the best choice for roads that receive a lot of traffic, as constant pressure on the millings can cause them to fail. Mar 21, 2012. #2. Asphalt millings is an awesome and affordable material for driveways, especially high traffic areas because it doesnt' spread out and dug into the dirt like gravel does but rather compact more and more with more use. That he will roll it and seal it is sweeeeet!.
No. Besides the other reasons pointed out, the tar in the millings will react with the concrete and weaken it over time. When contractors plan to demo a concrete surfaced bridge, they will pave it with asphalt year prior because it makes the concrete easier to break up at demo time. same reason asphalt patches in concrete don't hold and wind up making the "fixed" hole bigger when more …

Hey guys, I am preparing a bid that includes the tear out of a 65' x 44' asphalt pad that is approximately 3" thick. Looking through my reference material here, I can't find a "swell factor" for the purpose of figuring out how many triaxles are required to truck that amount of asphalt …
I got a great deal on asphalt millings. In fact, many times you can get it for free. It locks together tight (it should be compacted) and you don't get the dirty splash wash that you would get from crusher run stone. I got about 100 tons to build my parking pad up several feet. I know that sounds like a lot but a regular dump truck load was 20 ...

Try walking on asphalt millings with bare feet. It will most likely hurt. It will not be comfortable for the horse's feet either. You can do it around the border and around the gates because the horses don't have to stand there if they don't want to, but I would most certainly not cover a large area with it. If you plan to put a mat over it (if ...

The contractor loosened the base to 8 inches graded it and applied a 2 inch base of process that was also used under the asphalt section. Everything was rolled and compacted. On top of that went 3 inches of millings compacted to 2 1/2 inches. So the whole process was done like a regular driveway except for the top coat.

Our yard at work is millings, I hate it. If it's not in the budget then I have no other ideas, it's black top or nothing for me. I'm down to maybe 7 gravel driveways I plow, I only keep them because I've been plowing them all for over a decade now and they are great payers, I don't take new ones.

If the millings come from residential driveways, the operator can scoop up a lot of dirt with the asphalt. That works its way into the millings, and they don't pack too well. If the millings are light gray to brown, I'd pass. If the millings come from roadways, the asphalt is thick and it's less likely they'll pick up much dirt.

About 3 years ago we lucked into a large quantity of millings. We spread them with a skidsteer and went over them with a vibratory roller. It looks like regular asphalt in most places and has held up well even through the snow plowing, except for a few places where we didn't have sufficient thickness. I wouldn't go less than 4-6" thick.

Posted September 13, 2012. I'm looking to elimnate my 70 foot long driveway of grass and pebbles and put something "real" in. Concrete will run me about $7K and pavers won't be much different which is way too much to spend. I can get asphalt millings for about $700 but we're concerned the "black" will get tracked into the house over time by us ...
It's just the ripped up old asphalt from new paving jobs, sifted and cleaned of rocks and debris. Over time it has a tendency to repack and bond back together. I had my shop driveway partially paved and the company suggested millings as a lower cost alternative for the remaining portion. The quote was about 5/8 the cost of hot asphalt.
After many heavy loads the millings look like normal asphalt pavement - at least on the surface. As Focht3 discusses, there was no documentation. It appears that this would make a great research topic that could be put to good practical use.
Several uses in of asphalt millings are fully appropriate in accordance with regulations for recycling and beneficial use and, therefore, millings may be used as follows below. The use of loose unbound asphalt millings on land and roadway surfaces without the placement of a paved top surface is not generally appropriate.
Asphalt millings are bits of recycled asphalt that are byproducts of a pavement rejuvenation process of the same name. These small bits of asphalt are laid down and compacted with immense pressure to form a road or driveway. While asphalt millings are generally not suitable for streets that have lots of traffic, they work perfectly for ...
Asphalt millings look like a fine-granular dark packed gravel. Not quite as smooth or solid as the original asphalt, but can be close, depending on how laid out and compacted. Pea (bank run) gravel is about the worst driveway material there is.
I had asphalt "millings" brought in when I did my pole barn. Yeah, these weren't millings, they were major chunks. Some of them were so big I couldn't move them by hand and the tractor had a hard time moving them (it didn't help that I was moving them as the remnant rains of Hurricane Katrina were moving through).
As any finished surface layer goes, it is only as good as the base it is on. make sure you dig out soft spots and pack well. Place in short lifts and pack well. grade your final layer to the contour you want befor really putting the hammer to the final compaction. make sure the moisture is just right when packing. it is kinda dirty however and ...
