Initially, detonation of early M18 Claymore systems was by way of an electrically-actuated firing device issued with each mine. The firing system was found to not be wholly reliable, sometimes causing premature detonation of the explosive, so a work around was used to replace the M18 battery holder firing device as issued with a standard M57 firing device instead.
