Original circuit design SAG/AG mills and ball mills (Huckleberry SABC circuit), however very energy intensive and also energy inefficient accounting for ~80% of the overall process plant energy (depending on the overall process) 2. Changes to design lead to HPGR and ball mill circuits, thus lowering the energy consumption costs slightly 3.

A novel AG-Crusher-HPGR circuit for hard, weathered ores containing clays A research project was conducted at the University of British Columbia (UBC) resulting in the development and evaluation of a novel comminution circuit incorporating autogenous grinding and parallel trains of cone crushers and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR).
The feasibility of a novel comminution circuit, using an autogenous (AG) mill/scrubber and parallel trains of cone crushers and high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) is being investigated.
In some flow sheets, HPGR is placed before the roll crusher in order to induce cracks and fissures in the ore particles. In such cases ball mill grinding is facilitated. Several alternate circuits were suggested by Baum, Patzelt and Kneecht and Patzelt et al., . A typical flow sheet for coarse grinding is illustrated in Figure 6.6.

grinding circuits based on large inefficient tumbling mills. Circuits using Cone Crushers and High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR) have proven to be more energy efficient. These comminution devices have during the last two decades been implemented for hard rock materials.

The most common HPGR based circuit involves feeding primary crusher product to a secondary crushing circuit with of cone crushers in closed circuit with screens, followed by tertiary crushing with HPGRs, also operating in closed circuit with screens. The product of these two stages of crushing and screening then passes to secondary milling.
A novel approach was used in the estimation of the product size distributions. The results of the pilot scale tests ( Table 1, Table 2, Table 3, Table 4) showed the energy savings of the HPGR, the specific energy consumption was less than 3 kWh/t and the model was quite accurate in this prediction.

HPGR technology provides the greatest benefits for hard and very hard ores, for ores which are softer, AG or SAG milling can be the more economical solution due to the simplicity of the circuit, not requiring secondary crushing, screening and …
Results from this research showed that operating the first-stage HPGR in open circuit and the second stage in closed circuit with a 710µm screen, resulted in a circuit energy requirement of 14.85kWh/t, a reduction of 9.2 and 16.7% over the HPGR / ball mill and cone crusher / ball mill circuits, respectively.

A crusher is not able to directly produce a specific grain size, so the discharge always contains a wide range from fines up to a maximum size, plus oversize. The solution is a crushing circuit with an arrangement of a crusher, a subsequent screen and a conveyor to return the oversize to the crusher.
HPGR may not be the right machine for less competent ore, especially when the ore has clays. So far it looks like that there are certain ore types that require too much energy to have them ground down in a conventional SAG-Ball Mill circuit. This is the case where HPGR circuits come handy.

In mineral processing or metallurgy, the first stage of comminution is crushing.. Depending of the type of rock (geometallurgy) to be crushed, there are 2 largely different techniques at your disposition for crushing rocks. In principle, compression crushing is used on hard and abrasive rocks by placing them between a high wear-resistant plate/surface.
High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) are becoming an increasingly popular energy efficient solution for comminution of hard rock ores. A significant barrier to the increased adaptation of HPGRs is the current requirement for large amounts of sample for pilot testing. The primary objective of the research was to develop a DEM based computer model for an HPGR to analyze the particle behavior in ...

The HPGR was introduced to minerals industry as a replacement for tertiary crushers, SAG mills and rod mills. In some applications it appears as a pebble crusher in AG milling. HPGR has attracted the attention of many researchers for around two decades, resulting in various modeling approaches for throughput or size reduction of the equipment.
AG-CRUSHER-HPGR CIRCUIT A novel HPGR flowsheet was proposed to take advantage of the potential operating cost savings in processing hard rocks, to stabilize production, and to mitigate issues caused by the soft and clayish materials. The proposed flowsheet is shown in Figure 1; evaluation of its capabilities was the object of the research.
Minerals recently sold a KHD high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) to Goldrock Mines for installation in an Argentina heap leach gold mine. After a hard fought competition by all major suppliers, Goldrock Mines awarded Minerals North America an order for the supply of a roller press (RPS), or a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR) as it is known in the minerals industry.
The novel two-stage HPGR-stirred mill circuit demonstrated a significant reduction in energy of 34%, as compared to the SABC circuit. It must be noted that the energy for any additional equipment, which would be required to disperse the HPGR product prior to screening at 0.71 mm, was not accounted for.
According to Amelunxen and Meadows, the CAPEx of comminution circuits of ores with low hardness based on HPGR was estimated to be 6.4% higher than that of a circuit using only conventional (cone) crushing for the same type of ore. As ore hardness increases, this difference in CAPEx decreases, so that for hard ores, the capital cost for a ...
Traditionally, the generated pebbles are re-crushed via cone crushers, however the hard and abrasive nature of these pebbles result into significant liner wear and frequent cone crusher downtime. Integrating a HPGR into the pebble re-grinding circuit can alleviate the wear component and provide an improved overall feed to the (S)AG mill.
The Coalition for Energy Efficient Comminution (CEEC) has been established and is supported by a broad range of mining sector companies keen to accelerate awareness, knowledge transfer and, by implication, improve energy and cost outcomes in the substantive area of comminution.
