indexable mill and leave around .25 step of material in the corner to make the radius. I get a lot of chatter ( especially in the corner) and thought maybe I could get some tips on F&S. The radial DOC is .05, axial increase from .05 to .25, 3000 rpm at .002 Feed per tooth, 3 flute SC .5" ball endmill brand new. All this is done on a lathe.
Automatic external threads are not available for milling at this time. It is possible to machine approximate external threads using ball and flat end mills if threads are modeled and are at least ½-13 (M12) or larger. Threaded holes on turned parts are also available and external threads are offered on the axial diameters.
Backlash with a CNC is the same as taking a screw and threading a nut on to it. Now with one hand hold the screw and the other hand hold the nut and push/pull on the nut. That small amount of movement between the threads is the cause of backlash. Since both the screw and nut threads don't fit perfectly together there is always "Play".
CNC Machinist Calculator Pro is a machining calculator designed for manufacturing engineers, machinists, CNC operators, tool & die makers, and at home hobbyists. Not been at this machining lark very long . Machines I have are a Fortis (clausing derived ) 12" x 26 lathe and just recently acquired Centec 2 horizontal mill, both are in amazing condition for their age,the Fortis is from the early 50's and the Centec2 from late 40's .
Jog the X Axis 0.010" (0.25 mm) in the negative (-) direction. Record the difference between these two values: The indicator value. The X-Axis position on the control. If the difference is more than 0.0002" (0.005 mm), the backlash is too large. Caution: Before you perform the manual backlash test, make sure the machine is not in an alarm ...

Sherline offers a unique and versatile thread-cutting attachment for its lathe. This low-cost attachment enables you to machine thirty-six different unified thread pitches (Pitch range from 80 to 5 threads per inch) and twenty-eight different metric thread pitches (Pitch range from .25 to 2.0 mm).
Characteristics of ball screws • High mechanical efficiency In ball screws, about 90% or more of the force used to rotate the screw shaft can be converted to the force to move the ball nut. Since friction loss is extremely low, the amount of force used to rotate the screw shaft is as low as one third of that needed for the acme thread lead screw.

I believe you would need to make up a thread tool with the proper thread/rope form for the finishing pass but you might start with something else to rough it out to reduce surface contact area while roughing. The other way would be to mill it with a ball mill if you have "C" axis capabilities.
